Dog Handler
After today’s tutorial I was left thinking about the role of the dog handler within the dog tutorial sessions. After contacting the Pets As Therapy (PAT) charity they informed me that the dog handler would need to be present during the tutorials. This dynamic I had not accounted for in my initial proposal. I was worried that this presence of the handler may make the tutorial space less personal but after reframing this I think the presence of the dog might be an asset.
My one of my previous concerns was that the relaxed atmosphere that the dog may create might bring up emotions with participants which need further support. I had resolved to inform student services about this and direct students towards this support if they need it. Now I think the inclusion of the dog handler will actually make the tutorial a little more formal, Breaking the 1-to-1 student/tutor bubble so it can be focused on the students work rather than their state of mind or reasons they haven’t been present in the studio space.
Student + Dog + Tutor + Handler
I want these to be motivating tutorials that open up a new way for students to think about making their work. If they have been struggling coming into the studios I hope this will this I hope that this event will act as a fire break and help them to re-engage with the practice in the studio spaces.
Also if the session goes well I will take steps to encourage other departments to implement dog tutorials around the university. It is a more accessible format if the handler is involved. Making organisation with PAT cleaer and more likely to succeed.
