Glossary of Key Terms:
Positionality
The social and political context that creates your identity, taking into account; race, class, gender, disability, sexuality.
Privilege
Seen and unseen advantage afforded to a person because of their race, class, gender , economic background and other markers of identity.
Intersectionality
The cross overs of social categorization such as gender, race, sexuality and other markers of identity. Together such cross over can create disadvantage or discrimination.
White Discomfort
Named by Robin DiAngelo to express the discomfort many white people feel when discussing racism.
White Guilt
Feelings of shame and remorse experience by some white people when they come up against the impact of racial injustice and racism and how they may have benefited from it.
Black And Minority Ethnic
Sometimes shorted to ‘BAME’, a term used to describe Black and Minority Ethnic members of a predominantly white cohort.
SEN
Short for Special Educational Needs and often refers to students with different learning abilities such as dyslexia, autism, ADHD. It should be noted that SEN does not always refer to students with disabilities, SEND refers to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Social Change
The change of the codes of Social Structure of a society through signifiers such as values. It can describe modifications to process, patterns and behaviours in the social setting. Social Change occurs when societal institution and structures undergo a seismic shift, e.g. Black Lives Matter, MeToo.
Social Justice
Fairness as manifested in society by aiming to create an equal society in which the needs and experience of the individual matter to the whole.
Social Identity Theory,
Penned by Henri Tajfel this theory states the groups an individual belong to are a source of pride and self esteem which from an important part of our identity. Social Identity is an individuals sense of who they are based on their group memberships.
Decolonizing the Institution
The re-examination of what and how knowledge is produced by confronting the colonial hierarchy of knowledge. In art school this is typically through the lens of the western art cannon.
Imperialist Insecurities
The legacy of imperialism in Britain which heavily influenced the outcome of the Brexit referendum by appealing to the anxieties and loss of the cultural identity of the British Empire.
