Micro Teaching 9/02/2022

I found today’s session very helpful to take part in. The 20min session on Souvenirs that I lead was quite different from tutorials and briefings I would be delivering as part of my teaching role  in the studio but I enjoyed the challenge.

My session was based on a souvenir I was given following a friends holiday to Greece. I intend to use the object to demonstrate how bodies are misrepresented through history, I wanted to do this by focusing on a particular statue of the Greek goddess Artemis who was is actually the wounded Amazon. My learning objectives were to address identity and the exhibition of objects  that may represent how other people see us. I wanted to look at signs and signifiers, the privilege of travel.

My peers were engaged in making their souvenirs in plastercince, they enjoyed thinking about how and why their souvenirs were made but felt the learning outcome weren’t clear. They felt the session was interesting to take part in but could have done with setting out learning outcome at the beginning.  They found the ground tour section confusing so would have liked some more visual info here and also some more in-depth slide to show the journey of the the Artemis sculpture and is excavation. Santanu suggested I might benefit from Teaching Walkthroughs books by Tom Sherraton which I will look into.

I tried to include too much in this session and as a result the outcomes were unclear. I take on the feedback and think if I was to redo this session I would focus on either the souvenir as a way the think about the global travel of objects or my Artemis figure as a miss representation of objects catalogued focusing on how history can be manipulated and reshaped through artifacts. I would set out the learning outcomes at the beginning of the session and try to tie it together at the end with a question for my peers.
