Dreaming of Data

16/02/22. Video thoughts on the first half of todays Data Stories and Epistemic Donuts workshop.

It is hard to make data interesting and engage people to want to take part but I really enjoyed the discussion after the haiku and limerick data workshop, especially around the use of the term BAME. Much of the discussion was geared towards action with many people agreeing this term was outdated, problematic and offensive. It let me thinking how can equal opportunities data be better used to support action?

There were points made about not stopping collecting data so equality across class, gender and race can be achieved. I agree with this and would like to see some real world examples of how this has been taken up by universities .

Data says 2020-21 was the most equal in attainment so far but still with an 11% gap, perhaps this was because of difference circumstances during the pandemic? If so could this be about an equalising of learning culture through online learning, if so how can we learn from this and built into the curriculum?

In our breakout groups we discussed the institutions focus on community and how this might be better supported by free subject specific summer schools focused on better attainment. Especially for subjects under represented in GCSES and Foundation courses.
